How can we create opportunities for authentic writing so our students won't just use Chat GPT? I don't want students to just fill in the blanks on an essay outline; I want them to take time to consider what words fit their writing best, how to manipulate sounds to create a feeling, how to best express the characteristics of their ideas in both fiction and nonfiction. Enter Project-Based Writing. With guidance and structure, students practice choice writing while also having authentic reasons to create persuasive and narrative writing in service of their goals. Optimize creativity while maintaining structure, increase independence while still guiding students all the way in work that meets standards and the student's personal goals.
